How to Blend  Brutalist Decor Into Your Home

Brutalist decor embraces raw, industrial materials and bold, geometric designs. It’s a style that celebrates simplicity but with an edge. It is perfect for those who love modern, minimalist spaces with a touch of drama. If you’re thinking of bringing brutalism into your home, follow our suggestions to achieve the look. Let’s start with the basics.

Materials and color palette

Brutalist design uses materials like exposed concrete, steel, and raw wood. These elements create a foundation of texture and depth. Incorporating concrete into your space can be as bold as an entire wall or as subtle as a concrete planter. Steel accents—whether in furniture frames or lighting fixtures—are essential for that industrial edge, while natural woods, especially with visible grain or texture, soften the look without compromising on boldness.

The color palette for brutalism is moody and minimalist. Think deep charcoals, blacks, slate, and muted earth tones. These colors create a neutral yet striking backdrop for your decor. Adding small pops of color like dark blues or browns can break up the monochrome without disrupting the theme. This is where the Blueprint Murphy Bed, with its Mysterious Blue finish and steel frame, becomes an ideal complement. It adds just the right amount of contrast and character without straying from the brutalist aesthetic.

Furniture with presence

When choosing furniture, look for pieces that are simple in design but have a strong, sculptural presence. Chunky geometric shapes are the hallmark of brutalist furniture. Sofas with boxy lines, armchairs with block-like arms, or angular coffee tables are great examples. These pieces shouldn’t just be functional but should also act as statement pieces within the room.

The Canvas Murphy Bed is an excellent choice for a more flexible, multi-functional option. Its clean lines and unfinished maple finish offer versatility—it can be stained to fit your exact palette or left raw to enhance the room’s rugged feel. This bed adds functionality to a minimalist space, giving you flexibility without overwhelming the aesthetic.

The Canvas: Vertical wall-bed with Supreme Steel frame, 16″ side cabinets, drawers, molding and LED lights. Unfinished Maple can be stained or painted any color.

Layer textures for warmth

While brutalism is known for its stark, industrial look, layering textures is essential to make the space feel livable and inviting. Wool rugs, chunky knit throws, or soft leather cushions can all help to soften the hardness of concrete and metal. Opt for neutral tones in these soft furnishings to maintain a moody atmosphere while creating comfort.

Accessorizing in brutalism

Less is more when accessorizing in a brutalist space. Stick to minimalist decor pieces—think metal sculptures, raw ceramic vases, or large abstract art. The goal is to keep the space uncluttered, but every accessory should have an impact. Statement lighting in industrial designs—whether a large pendant light or a steel-framed floor lamp—can be a functional element and an art piece.

If you’re looking for small ways to tie the room together, consider adding steel hardware accents, like the handles on our Murphy Beds, to echo the metallic finishes. These small details enhance the continuity of the brutalist design.

Blending bold and practical with Murphy Beds

Murphy Beds are ideal for brutalist spaces because they offer flexibility and practicality without sacrificing style. In smaller apartments or homes where space is at a premium, these beds can be hidden away, maintaining the room’s clean lines and minimalist nature.

The Blueprint Murphy Bed stands out with its dark, industrial finish and clean geometric form. At the same time, the Canvas offers a touch of warmth, ideal for softening an overly industrial space. Both options complement the brutalist aesthetic by offering practicality and visual appeal.

Murphy Wall Beds: The Perfect Addition to Your Modern Prefab Home

Looking for the perfect addition to your modern prefab home? Consider a Murphy Wall Bed.

Prefab homes, also known as modular homes, are becoming increasingly popular due to their affordability, speed of construction, and customizable design options. Traditional houses, on the other hand, are built on-site from scratch.

The main difference is that modular homes are built in a controlled environment, which can lead to better quality control and then tend to be more energy efficient. They are constructed off-site in a factory and then transported to the final location for assembly.

There are several types of prefab homes, including modular, panelized, and manufactured homes.

Why are Murphy Wall Beds ideal for prefab homes?

Murphy wall beds can be a great space-saving solution for modular houses, which are designed to be easily assembled and disassembled. Since modular houses are often smaller than traditional homes, a Murphy bed can provide a comfortable sleeping area without taking up valuable floor space during the day. Additionally, many Murphy beds can be customized to fit the style and decor of a modular house, making them a practical and stylish choice.

While they provide a comfortable sleeping solution without taking up a permanent spot in the room, many Murphy beds come with built-in storage options, making them even more practical for small spaces.

Let’s look at the main types of prefab homes.

Panelized homes

Panelized homes are pre-built sections of a home that are constructed in a factory and then assembled on-site. They are similar to modular homes but typically offer more customization options. Panelized homes can be a good option for those looking for a faster and more efficient building process, but they may not be the best fit for those looking for a completely custom home design.

Manufactured homes

A manufactured home is a type of housing built in a factory and then transported to a site where it is installed on a foundation. Manufactured homes are built to federal standards and can range in size and style. They are often a more affordable housing option compared to traditional site-built homes.

Tiny homes

Tiny homes are small, often portable, and typically under 500 square feet. They are designed to be efficient and minimalist, with a focus on functionality over space.

Alley homes

These small homes are built on the same lot as a larger home, often in the backyard or alleyway. They are designed to provide affordable housing options in urban areas.

How to decorate a prefab home

When it comes to decorating a prefab house, there are a few tips that can help you make the most of your space. First, consider using light-colored paint or wallpaper to make the rooms feel larger and brighter.

Next, incorporate mirrors and other reflective surfaces to help bounce light around the room.

Another great tip is to use multi-functional furniture pieces, such as a Murphy sofa bed or storage ottoman, to save space and add functionality.

You can also add pops of color and texture through throw pillows, rugs, and curtains to add interest to your space.

Finally, don’t be afraid to personalize your space with artwork, family photos, and other decor items that reflect your personality and style. Remember, a prefab house can be just as cozy and inviting as any other home with the right decorations and design choices.

How to Increase Rental Income with Murphy Beds

Summer is here, so naturally everyone’s minds are on one thing: vacation. This means that anyone desperate for a getaway will be clambering to find their perfect holiday location — and what comes with that, of course, is finding the best place to stay.

If you have a listing on VRBO or AirBnB you know how important the summer season is for rental opportunities — whether it’s families with kids off from school, coworkers looking for a quick escape from the office lifestyle, or friends just looking to get out of the city for some fun.

But what comes with being a host is discovering new ways to improve your rental home through various cost-efficient solutions that will inevitability help raise your listing price.

The solution? Murphy Beds.

More bedrooms, more guests

When people travel and are considering different accommodation options, one of the first things they think of is sleeping arrangements. This can be a determining factor on whether your rental is even listed in a search (considering that guest total is one of the first prompts on any rental website like AirBnB).

Travelers in larger numbers are a major contributor to the rental market, and Murphy Beds can ensure that your place welcomes any and all groups as necessary.

Let’s say that your listing has a master bedroom, an office, and a living room with a pullout couch. A Murphy Bed could easily fit in the office and/or in the living room to add another sleeping area. This could help bring in more guests, and allow you to raise your prices accordingly.

Simply put: more beds = more guests = higher listing price.

Plus, you can customize your Murphy Bed to fit in each designated area of your host house. You can learn to customize your Murphy Bed online in this blog post that provides step-by-step guidelines!

Increased storage options

Storage is a notable part of travelling, especially when you’re vacationing with a larger party. There are plenty of groups whose storage needs can significantly impact where they choose to stay:

  • Families that need separate areas for everyone’s clothing, bathroom items, hobbies brought from home, etc.
  • A groom or bridal party needing to store their many props for their nights out
  • Groups travelling with babies or elderly individuals who require special items that can take up space if left out in the open

This is where storage solutions become a lifeline, and where Murphy Beds save the day. With the numerous cabinets and drawers imbedded in a Murphy Bed’s frame, there are plenty of nooks to perfectly accommodate the heavy packers.

And with the added space thanks to the Murphy Bed’s easily retractable frame, more external storage areas — like cabinets, ottomans, or dressers — can be added. Not to mention that Murphy Beds can come in many cabinetry styles, finishes, colours, and hardware elements that fit your rental aesthetics.

(Learn how to choose the right Murphy Bed.)

This can be a huge sell for many guests travelling in large parties, making your listing all the more popular — and higher demand means the ability to charge more.

Space for amenities

Beyond simply sleeping areas and storage, guests examining the rental market will always look for places with the best amenities.

Although it’s the summer, there are many people who may still travel for work, and amenities like a desk can be a tremendous pull for them.

In a smaller household, a Murphy wall can store extra kitchen items for the cooking aficionados, board games for the competitive bunch, speakers for the music lovers, extra pillows and blankets for the comfy crowd, and so on.

How Much Space Do You Need for a Murphy Bed? Measurements, Clearance & Layout Tips

When planning a Murphy Bed, one of the first questions that arises is: Will it actually fit in my space? Most homeowners have a general idea of where they want the bed to go, but the details, including ceiling height, cabinet depth, and how far the bed sticks out when open, matter more than people expect.

The good news is that most modern Murphy Beds are designed to fit in standard homes, condos, and even tight studio apartments. Once you understand the basic measurements and clearances, choosing the right orientation and size becomes simple.

Below is everything you need to know before you commit to a Murphy Bed, whether you’re outfitting a guest room, creating a multipurpose office, or making a small space work smarter.

Minimum Ceiling Height: The One Number You Need to Know

For a vertical Murphy Bed, the height of the cabinet determines whether the unit will fit, plus a small margin to anchor it safely.

A standard Queen vertical Murphy Bed is approximately 88 inches tall, with a recommended additional 5 inches of clearance above it. This extra space ensures you can secure the unit to structural studs at the top of the cabinet.

If your ceiling height is 8 ft or higher, a vertical Murphy Bed will almost always fit.
Lower ceilings or attic spaces may require a horizontal orientation instead.

Horizontal Queen beds are roughly 70 inches tall, making them a better option for rooms with:

  • sloped ceilings
  • basement bulkheads
  • unusually low ceilings
  • areas where wall height is limited by windows

Depth of the Cabinet: How Far It Sticks Out From the Wall

Murphy Beds are much shallower than people assume. Closed, the cabinet for both vertical and horizontal units is typically around 16 inches deep, depending on design or trim details.

This means the footprint is similar to a wardrobe or built-in cabinet.

Inside that depth, the mechanism, mattress, frame, and stiffeners are fully contained. Nothing protrudes into the room until the bed opens.

Open Bed Protrusion: The Most Important Measurement for Room Layout

When the bed is fully open, a Queen Murphy Bed typically extends around 89 inches into the room.

This is the measurement that affects:

  • walking space
  • furniture placement
  • door swing paths
  • office desks or shelving nearby

The simplest way to plan is to imagine a standard queen mattress extending from the wall because that’s essentially what happens when the bed folds down.

If you have roughly 7.5 feet of depth from wall to opposite wall (or to the next obstruction), a Queen vertical Murphy Bed will feel comfortable. Smaller beds naturally require less space.

Side Clearance: How Much Space You Need on Each Side

Most Murphy Beds do not require much side clearance for the mechanism itself, but you do need access to both sides during installation and for attaching the front panel.

A safe rule of thumb is:

  • At least 3 inches of space on each side during installation
  • More space if you plan to add side cabinets, shelving, or night tables

If you’re working in a narrow room, a simple design without side cabinetry maximizes available walking room.

Mattress Thickness and How It Affects Fit

Murphy Beds typically work with:

  • up to 10-inch mattresses (regular legs)
  • up to 12-inch mattresses (extended legs)

The mattress is stored vertically inside the cabinet, so choosing the right thickness ensures the bed closes smoothly and the cabinet doesn’t need extra depth.

A lightweight, coil-style mattress is recommended for long-term performance.

Vertical vs. Horizontal: Which Fits Better in Your Space?

Both orientations save space, but they fit differently depending on your room shape and obstacles.

Vertical Murphy Beds

Best for rooms where:

  • ceiling height is at least 8 ft
  • you want a classic “pull-down-from-the-wall” look
  • you don’t have furniture blocking the foot of the bed
  • the room is deeper than it is wide

Vertical beds generally provide the most natural sleeping experience because the headboard stays against the wall.

Horizontal Murphy Beds

Best for rooms where:

  • ceiling height is limited
  • you’re working around windows, soffits, or wall obstructions
  • the room is wider than it is deep
  • you want the bed to open sideways to leave the center of the room clear

Horizontal beds are popular in:

  • kids’ rooms
  • basements
  • office conversions
  • tight condo layouts

Desk and Hybrid Designs: What to Consider When Space Does Double Duty

Some models (like desk-bed combinations) require you to account for desk depth as well as bed protrusion.

For example, a Murphy Bed with an integrated desk may have a 75-inch workspace surface that stays level as the bed opens. These designs are ideal for remote workers, but you’ll want to factor in chair space and nearby storage to keep the room functional day and night.

How Long Do Murphy Beds Last?

When you invest in a Murphy Bed, you’re adding more than furniture: you’re choosing flexible design that works as hard as you do. Naturally, people ask how long a Murphy Bed will last. The honest answer? It depends on the materials, the mechanism, and how it’s cared for. With quality components and basic maintenance, a Murphy Bed can serve you beautifully for decades.

Hardware Makes All the Difference

The lifting mechanism is the heart of every Murphy Bed. Steel or aluminum systems that have been refined and tested over decades maintain their smooth operation year after year. Our beds have withstood thousands of open-and-close cycles, proof of its strength that lighter, lower-grade kits can’t match.

Cabinetry Quality Counts

Solid materials, precision joinery, and durable finishes all contribute to a bed’s lifespan. Quality cabinetry supports the mechanism and keeps the unit stable over time. Look for industrial grade melamine or a plywood with a wood veneer top rather than heavier options as they are difficult to work with.

Use and Care Matter

How often the bed is used naturally affects wear. For nightly sleeping, choose hardware designed for daily residential or commercial use. Guest rooms or multi-purpose spaces will see less motion, but quality design still makes the difference between a bed that feels new after ten years and one that starts to sag.

Proper Installation Extends Life

A Murphy Bed’s reliability depends on professional installation. Anchoring the cabinet securely to a stable wall and ensuring the frame is balanced keeps motion smooth and quiet. Over time, a quick inspection, such as tightening fasteners or checking alignment, goes a long way toward preserving performance.

How to Tell if a Murphy Bed is Built to Last

If you’re shopping for a Murphy Bed, a few signs reveal how it will hold up:

  • Materials that feel solid. A sturdy, well-finished cabinet feels substantial, not hollow.
  • Mechanism quality. Look for spring-balanced or piston-lift systems made from steel or aluminum, not soft metals or plastic.
  • Warranty and support. Manufacturers confident in their products offer multi-year or lifetime coverage.
  • Proven experience. A company with decades of installations has already tested its systems in real homes.

These details separate long-term furniture from short-term solutions.

Built to Last

We’ve seen Murphy Beds still performing beautifully after decades of daily use. Some of our earliest systems from the late 1970s remain in service today, a testament to durable engineering and thoughtful design.

There’s no single number for how long a Murphy Bed lasts. Lifespan depends on the quality of its design, hardware, and care. When those elements come together, your Murphy Bed won’t just save space. It will stay part of your home for generations.

Explore our Murphy Bed Hardware Systems to see how lasting quality is built into every detail.

Are Murphy Beds Worth the Money? What to Know Before You Buy

If you’re shopping for a Murphy Bed, you’ve likely already decided that saving space and doing it beautifully matters to you. But with prices that range widely online, it’s natural to wonder: are Murphy Beds really worth the money?

When you choose a quality Murphy Bed, you’re not just buying a piece of furniture. You’re investing in craftsmanship, comfort, and flexibility that lasts for decades.

What makes a Murphy Bed worth the money?

A Murphy Bed isn’t a temporary purchase. It’s a piece of engineered furniture designed to work seamlessly for years. The real difference between a bargain bed and a lasting one often comes down to materials, mechanism, and manufacturer. Murphy Beds has been designing and manufacturing European-engineered hardware systems since 1975. Every bed is built to exacting standards, tested by our in-house team, and designed to perform smoothly year after year without sagging or sticking.

How long does a Murphy Bed last?

With proper care, a Murphy Bed can last for decades. Industry-leading warranties back our systems:

• Elite Aluminum hardware – lifetime warranty

• Supreme Steel hardware – 25-year warranty

• Build-A-Bed cabinetry – 5-year warranty

Because Murphy Beds use standard mattresses that aren’t folded or compressed, they keep their shape and comfort far longer than futons or pull-out couches.

Are Murphy Beds expensive to install or maintain?

Installation is straightforward for most homeowners. We provide detailed instruction videos, toll-free support, and live chat to guide you through every step. Once installed, a Murphy Bed requires almost no maintenance, just smooth operation and occasional cleaning of the cabinetry. For those who prefer professional help, local installers are available in many regions. Either way, the long-term cost of ownership is low compared to replacing less durable furniture every few years.

How do Murphy Beds compare to futons and pull-out couches?

Futons and pull-out couches may seem practical at first, but their thinner mattresses and dual-purpose use can cause them to wear out faster. Murphy Beds, by contrast, use full-size mattresses that maintain their comfort and shape. Bedding can stay in place when the bed folds away, saving time every day.

While futons and couches offer seating, Murphy Beds transform a room completely, creating open space during the day and a comfortable sleeping area at night.

Can you customize a Murphy Bed to suit your space?

Yes. With our Build-A-Bed configurator, you can design a Murphy Bed that fits your room and your style. Choose from vertical or horizontal layouts, cabinetry finishes, and hardware options that complement your décor. It’s a lasting investment that adds both functionality and design value to your home.

What is the Best Murphy Bed? A Buyer’s Guide

Shopping for a Murphy Bed is about more than saving space. You want something stylish, practical, and built to last. With so many online sellers, it can be difficult to know which beds offer true quality. Here are the key questions to ask before you buy, and how Murphy Beds Inc. measures up.

What makes a Murphy Bed high quality?

The difference between a bed that lasts decades and one that wears out quickly often comes down to four things:

Durable mechanisms: Look for steel or aluminum hardware that has been engineered to perform year after year.

Warranty support: Reputable companies stand behind their products with multi-year or even lifetime warranties.

Company history: A long track record proves the product is reliable. Newer online sellers may not be there in five years.

Customer service: Accessible support before and after purchase ensures peace of mind.

Murphy Beds Inc. has been manufacturing to exacting standards since 1975. More than 200,000 of our systems are installed worldwide, and many are still in use decades later.

  • Elite Aluminum Hardware: lifetime warranty
  • Supreme Steel Hardware: 25-year warranty
  • Build-A-Bed Cabinetry: 5-year warranty

These warranties apply to both residential and commercial applications. Hardware is replaced if defects are found due to manufacturing artistry, following factory inspection. Misuse, abuse, or applying excess weight or stress is not covered.

A Murphy Bed should work with your space as well as your style. Cabinetry finishes, trim details, and hardware choices make a big difference.

Our design team monitors trends daily through architects, designers, and décor media. This is why our beds have been featured on shows like The Property Brothers and The Drew Barrymore Show, and in publications such as Dwell.

Rumors by Behr: A rich maroon that breathes warmth and sophistication into any room, making it perfect for accent walls or chic cabinetry.

Quietude by Sherwin Williams: Imagine a tranquil sage green that transforms bedrooms and living areas into serene sanctuaries, instilling a sense of relaxation and peace in your home.

Cinnamon Slate by Benjamin Moore: This comforting plum-brown offers a modern twist with its adaptable charm.

More than just aesthetic enhancements, these colors inspire a sense of balance and vitality in our homes, paving the way for furniture as innovative as it is functional, such as the Murphy bed.

Design Trends: Smart and Stylish Living

With the rise of hybrid lifestyles, the demand for intelligent, stylish, and adaptable home designs is stronger than ever. This year highlights multifunctional furniture that adapts seamlessly to our changing needs, but let’s delve deeper into the aesthetic elements that are defining our spaces.

Textured Walls and Ceilings: The intrigue is in the details this year. Decorative plaster finishes make a comeback, offering a tactile sophistication to living spaces. Wallpapered ceilings are turning heads upwards with bold patterns and textures, while wood paneling brings organic warmth, grounding our homes with a natural feel. These elements are perfect for creating a distinct ambiance that complements the sleek functionality of furniture like Murphy beds.

Integrated Outdoor Living: The lines between indoors and outdoors continue to blur, with design trends favoring a fluid transition between the two. This integration is more than just aesthetic; it extends living spaces physically and visually. Cozy seating arrangements, outdoor kitchens, and weather-resistant décor are not just functional; they enhance the quality of home life, allowing you to entertain or unwind in an open, airy environment.

Wellness Spaces: Reflecting a growing emphasis on personal health and relaxation, dedicated zones for yoga, meditation, or spa-like bathrooms are becoming essential components of modern homes. These spaces, designed for tranquility and rejuvenation, underscore the importance of a home that can cater to the well-being of its occupants, providing a private retreat from the stresses of daily life.

Integrating Murphy Beds into Your Decor

Murphy beds have taken center stage this year, perfectly aligned with our shift towards multifunctionality and style. Ideal for small spaces, these beds transform from a comfy night’s sleep to an efficient daytime space with ease, enhancing the potential of your living area. Available in various finishes and styles, they effortlessly complement the season’s top color trends, such as the warm tones of Cinnamon Slate or the soothing hues of Quietude.

Consider setting a Murphy bed against a bold color like Rumors to create a striking focal point in your room. Complement this with softer tones like Quietude to maintain a relaxing atmosphere. Adding luxurious textiles like velvet throws or linen cushions in fashionable shades can further enhance the comfort and elegance of your space. This approach optimizes your living space and infuses it with the year’s leading style narratives, ensuring your home is chic and practical.

Back-to-School Space Savers: Murphy Wall-Beds for Every Student’s Needs

As students of all ages prepare to return to the classroom this fall, a well-organized, functional living space becomes more critical than ever. Whether you’re the parent of a young learner or a college student setting up your first apartment, discovering the right furniture that maximizes space while supporting educational and rest needs is crucial. Murphy Wall-Beds, known for its incredible space-saving capabilities, is a versatile solution that caters to students across the academic spectrum.

Creating room to grow and learn

For families with younger children, space in the home often serves multiple functions—play area, study zone, and sleep space. Murphy Wall-Beds can transform a bedroom into a playroom in seconds, providing ample room for creativity and fun during the day and comfortable sleep at night. The ease with which these beds can be stowed away makes them ideal for adapting to various daily activities.

    Adapting to teen needs

As children grow into teenagers, their room becomes a hub of activity—homework, social media interactions, and relaxation. A Murphy Wall-Bed in a teenager’s room ensures that these diverse needs are met without the clutter that typically comes with smaller spaces. Models with integrated features like desks or shelving are particularly beneficial, allowing teens an all-in-one area for sleep, study, and entertainment.

    College bound

For college students, dorm rooms or small apartments are often the reality, making efficient use of space a necessity. A Murphy Wall-Bed can be a game-changer in such settings, doubling the usable area by freeing up floor space during the day. This space can be used for studying, exercising, or simply hanging out with friends, making a small room feel like two.

    Integrated storage and study areas

One of the standout features of Murphy Wall-Beds is their ability to integrate other furniture components in a compact, seamless design. Options that include desks, bookcases, and storage compartments allow students to keep their books, technology, and school supplies organized and within reach. This functionality makes these beds an excellent choice for anyone looking to reduce clutter and maintain a focused study environment.

    Styling for young minds

Another advantage of Murphy Wall-Beds is their versatility in design and style. They can be customized to fit any décor, appealing to younger students’ imaginations and college students’ aesthetic preferences alike. Whether you opt for a bed with bright colours and fun motifs or a more understated, sophisticated design, Murphy Wall-Beds can be tailored to inspire and comfort every student.

    Safety and durability

Safety is a paramount concern, especially for parents of younger children. Modern Murphy Wall-Beds are designed with reliable mechanisms that lock into place, ensuring they are safe and easy to operate. Additionally, their sturdy construction means that they are built to last and withstand the wear and tear of daily use from energetic kids and busy college students.

    Installation and relocation

Another advantage of Murphy Wall-Beds is the possibility of being taken along to future homes. This feature is particularly beneficial for students who may move several times during their college years. Unlike traditional beds, which can be cumbersome and difficult to transport, Murphy Wall-Beds can be securely installed and later disassembled by professionals, making each relocation smoother.

    Budget-friendly options

College students often live within tight budgets, prioritizing cost-effective furniture solutions. Murphy Wall-Beds, while an investment, is a one-time purchase that provides a bed, desk, and often wardrobe storage in a single unit. This multipurpose functionality can negate the need to purchase additional furniture, ultimately saving money. Furthermore, the durability of high-quality Murphy Wall-Beds means they can last throughout one’s college career and beyond, offering excellent value over time.

6 Tips for Restful Nights with Murphy Wall-Beds

Are you dreaming of a more restful night’s sleep? Whether you live in a compact urban studio or just want to maximize your space, including a Murphy Wall-Bed in your sleep routine can transform your environment and sleep quality.

Here are some expert tips on unlocking the secret to your best sleep, featuring the versatile Murphy Wall-Bed.

    1. Create a soothing environment
The first step to better sleep is a tranquil environment. Murphy Wall-Beds help achieve a clutter-free and serene bedroom by freeing up space during the day and transforming a multipurpose room into a peaceful sanctuary at night.

Enhance this calm setting with the addition of an essential oil diffuser, using soothing scents like lavender or chamomile to promote relaxation and signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.
    2. Choose comfortable bedding
A great night’s sleep starts with what you sleep on. Selecting the right mattress for your Murphy Wall-Bed is crucial. Choose a mattress that provides support and comfort, conforms to your body’s natural posture, and reduces pressure points.

Pair your mattress with high-quality, soft bedding—think breathable cotton or moisture-wicking bamboo—to keep it comfortable throughout the night. Don’t forget to invest in cozy pyjamas to help regulate your body temperature and stay comfortable until morning.
    3. Minimize blue light exposure
In our digital age, cutting blue light from electronic devices at least an hour before bed is essential. Blue light can inhibit melatonin production, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep.

Consider swapping late-night TV or smartphone use for reading a book or practicing a relaxing hobby like drawing or knitting. This reduces blue light exposure and helps your mind unwind and prepare for sleep.
    4. Watch your diet and evening habits
What you eat or drink before bed can significantly impact your sleep quality. Avoid big meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime, as they can disrupt sleep. Instead, opt for a light snack, such as yogurt or a banana, which contains nutrients that may help promote sleep.

Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends, can help keep your body’s internal clock in check and enhance the quality of your sleep in the long run.
    5. Keep day and night distinct for better sleep
Keeping your sleeping area tucked away during the day strengthens the mental association between your bed and sleep. It’s a simple trick: use your bed exclusively for nighttime rest. This helps your brain recognize that the bed is for sleeping, not for daytime activities like reading or lounging, which can significantly enhance sleep quality at night.
    6. Block light, embrace sound
For extra tranquillity, ensure your space is cool, dark, and quiet. Blackout curtains and a white noise machine can do wonders to block out distractions and soothe you into sleep.

      Sweet dreams!

Choosing the Perfect Mattress for Your Murphy Wall Bed

Are you considering a Murphy wall bed to create more space in your home while securing a good night’s sleep? Murphy beds are an excellent solution for maximizing room functionality, and selecting the right mattress is crucial for comfort and support.

    Understanding Murphy wall bed requirements

Murphy wall beds require specific types of mattresses that can fold and compress easily without losing support or durability. For optimal performance, choosing an inner coil or spring mattress with a core thickness of up to 10 inches for regular-height legs or up to 12 inches for extended legs is recommended. This construction allows for easy folding and unfolding without damage.

    Focusing on weight considerations

The mattress’s weight is critical for your Murphy bed’s smooth operation and longevity. Choose a mattress weighing no more than 75 pounds to facilitate easy use and maintain the bed’s mechanics. While foam, latex, gel, or memory foam mattresses might be tempting due to their comfort features, their heavier weight and structure make them less ideal for Murphy beds, as they can stress the bed’s mechanisms and lead to quicker wear and tear.

    Balancing comfort and support

Adhere to the guidelines for mattress type and weight while prioritizing comfort by selecting a mattress with layers of comfort foam atop the spring core. This provides both the necessary support and plush comfort. Test mattresses for how well they conform to your body’s contours and provide adequate spine support, striking a balance between comfort and support for a restful sleep.

    Choosing durability and longevity

Invest in a quality mattress to prolong the life of your Murphy bed. Opt for durable materials and warranties that cover performance over time. Regular maintenance, like rotating the mattress periodically, can help extend its life and prevent uneven wear. A mattress protector can also safeguard against spills, stains, and dust, enhancing longevity.

    Rest assured

Finding the perfect mattress for your Murphy wall bed is key to creating a comfortable and functional sleeping space. By understanding the bed’s requirements, prioritizing weight, balancing comfort and support, and promoting durability, you can choose a mattress that enhances your lifestyle and ensures restful sleep for years.

Whether you select an inner coil mattress with comfort foam layers or explore other options within the recommended specifications, prioritize your comfort and well-being to reap the full benefits of your Murphy wall bed!

From Multifunctional to Biophilic: Bedroom Design Trends for 2024

The bedroom, a personal retreat for relaxation and rejuvenation, sees its trends evolve annually. As we step into 2024, let’s explore the emerging design aesthetics that promise to redefine our sanctuaries.

Today’s top designers are considering creating spaces that serve multiple purposes rather than a single function. As noted on MarthaStewart.com, there’s a growing trend to make every corner of the home more versatile.

    Purposeful Design: Space That Matters

Hendley & Co. designer Jessica Lynn Williams observes, “We’ve noticed the desire to occupy underutilized rooms or areas in the home more by introducing versatility.” Meredith Huck, owner of House of Huck, describes multifunctional design as “A beautiful home office with a hidden Murphy bed that doubles as a guest room, or a formal dining room that can easily transition into an entertainer’s dream complete with a bar space and cozy sitting area for friends and family.”

Simplicity Meets Elegance: The New Minimalism

Minimalism continues to reign, with an emphasis on functionality and serenity. The new minimalist trend infuses subtle elegance into the simplicity we know. Think furniture with clean lines and dual-purpose designs, like Murphy wall beds that blend seamlessly into the wall when not in use, doubling as shelving or art.

Color and Texture: A Sensory Revival

Color palettes take a refreshing turn with soothing biophilic hues—earthy tones that echo the natural world. Textures become more tactile; fabrics like bouclé and chenille add a cozy touch to the minimalist backdrop.

    Maximalism: Curated Chaos

For those who love a bolder approach, maximalism emerges with a refined twist. It’s not about clutter but about curated complexity. Combine vintage pieces with contemporary art, juxtaposing old and new to create a rich, layered look that tells a story.

    Nature-Inspired Themes

The biophilic design extends beyond color, bringing outdoor elements inside. Living walls, large leafy plants, and natural wood finishes foster a connection with nature.

    Smart Bedrooms: Technology Integrated

Smart home technology has become more discreet. TheSpruce.com refers to it as “concealed technology.” Invisible speakers, integrated charging ports, and customized lighting are all part of the design, ensuring functionality without compromising style.

As we embrace 2024’s bedroom design trends, remember that the ultimate goal is to create a space that resonates with your style. Whether through a color splash on an accent wall or a statement piece of furniture, let your bedroom be a canvas for your individuality.

Happy designing, and may your bedroom be the haven of your dreams in 2024.

Factors to consider when choosing Murphy Bed cabinetry

When choosing the right Murphy Bed cabinetry for your small living space, make note of these items:

    1. Size of the Room: Before purchasing Murphy Bed cabinetry, it’s essential to measure the dimensions of your room. Consider the available wall space and ceiling height to determine the appropriate size for your unit. This will ensure a seamless fit and maximize the functionality of your space.

    2. Design and Style: Murphy Bed cabinetry comes in various designs and styles to suit different tastes and preferences. Consider your room’s existing decor and choose a unit that complements the overall aesthetic. Whether you prefer a modern, minimalist look or a more traditional style, there is a Murphy Bed cabinetry option to suit your taste.

    3. Customization Options: One of the advantages of Murphy Bed cabinetry is its customization options. Consider your specific needs and preferences regarding additional features such as built-in shelving, desks, or storage compartments. Customizing your unit will ensure that it serves all your requirements and maximizes the functionality of your space.

    4. Quality and Durability: Murphy Bed cabinetry is an investment, so choosing a unit that is built to last is important. Look for high-quality materials and craftsmanship to ensure your unit will withstand daily use and stand the test of time.

Installing and maintaining Murphy Bed cabinetry

Setting up a Murphy Bed may seem daunting, but it can be a straightforward process with the right instructions and tools. Detailed installation guides and YouTube videos walk you through each step, making it easier for DIY enthusiasts to tackle the project themselves.

Maintenance of Murphy Bed cabinetry is relatively simple. Regularly dusting and wiping down the surfaces will help keep the unit clean and free from dirt and grime. If your unit includes built-in shelving or desks, organize, and declutter them regularly to maintain a tidy appearance. Additionally, periodically lubricating the hinges and mechanisms will ensure smooth operation and prevent squeaking or sticking.

It’s also important to follow the instructions for weight limits and distribution when using the Murphy Bed. Overloading the unit can cause damage to the hinges and compromise the safety of the bed. Be mindful of the weight of the mattress and any additional items you place on the bed.

By following these simple maintenance guidelines, you can keep your Murphy Bed cabinetry in excellent condition and ensure its longevity.

Keeping costs down when buying Murphy Bed cabinetry

When considering any home improvement project, cost is always a factor. Fortunately, Murphy Bed cabinetry offers a range of options to suit different budgets. Whether you’re looking for a basic model or a luxurious design, there is a solution available for every price point.

One way to keep costs down is to opt for a DIY Murphy Bed cabinetry kit. These kits come with all the necessary hardware and instructions, allowing you to assemble and install the unit yourself. While this option requires some level of handyman skills, it can save you a significant amount of money compared to hiring a professional.

8 Best Multifunctional Furniture Ideas for Every Room in Your Home

Maximizing living space without sacrificing style or functionality is made possible with multifunctional furniture. This furniture type serves multiple purposes, making it the ultimate space-saving solution for tiny homes or apartments.

Multipurpose furniture appeals to a wide range of people, including those who:

    • live in small spaces
    • value functionality and practicality
    • want to save money by investing in furniture that serves multiple purposes.
    • enjoy minimalist or modern design aesthetics

The trend of multipurpose furniture can be traced back to Japan, where limited living space has long been a challenge. The concept of “tansu” furniture, which combines storage and functionality, has existed for centuries in Japanese culture. Today, Japanese designers continue to innovate with multipurpose furniture, inspiring a global trend towards more efficient and adaptable living spaces.

Here are some of the best multifunctional furniture pieces to consider:

Nesting tables are two or more tables that can be stacked together to save space when not in use. They are versatile and can be used as side tables, coffee tables, or makeshift desks. Nesting tables are an excellent option for small living rooms or bedrooms.

Wall Mounted Desks and Tables are exactly what they sound like! They are mounted to the wall instead of standing on legs or a base. They can be easily installed and removed and don’t take up any floor space. Additionally, they can be adjusted to the perfect height for your comfort and ergonomic needs. These desks are a great space-saving solution for small apartments or home offices and can serve multiple purposes as foldable surfaces.

Storage Ottomans is a piece of furniture that serves as a comfortable seat and a storage solution. They typically have a hinged lid that reveals a storage compartment inside. Storage ottomans are a modern way to add seating and storage to your living room or bedroom. These ottomans can store blankets, pillows, or other items easily tucked away when not used.

Convertible Cribs are a worthwhile investment for new parents. They are a type of baby crib that can be changed into different beds as your child grows. This type of unit typically starts as a standard crib with adjustable mattress heights, then can be converted into a toddler bed, daybed, and even a full-size bed with a headboard and footboard. This saves money in the long run and eliminates the need to buy multiple beds as the child gets older.

Murphy Wall Beds with Integrated Table is a space-saving piece of furniture that combines a bed and a desk into one unit. The bed is designed to fold up and be stored vertically against the wall when not in use while the desk remains in place. This allows you to use the same space for sleeping and working, making it ideal for small apartments or home offices.

Floating Shelves are a trendy way to add extra storage to your walls without wasting valuable floor space. They can be used to display books, photos, or other decorative items. However, they may not be able to hold as much weight as different types of shelves. Floating shelves can be a great choice for many homes with proper installation and careful consideration of weight limits.

Foldable Chairs are a great option for small dining rooms or outdoor spaces. They can be easily stored away when not in use, freeing up valuable floor space. They can be used for extra seating when guests come or for outdoor events like barbecues and picnics. Depending on the style, these chairs can be very affordable.

Convertible Coffee Tables are ideal for the living room. They can be easily converted into a dining table or a work desk, making them perfect for small apartments or homes with limited space. Like foldable chairs, these tables can be easily stored to clear up floor space.

Costs and shopping for multifunctional furniture

Multifunctional furniture tends to be more expensive because it requires more design and engineering to create a piece that can serve multiple functions. Additionally, the materials used in multipurpose furniture are often of higher quality to ensure durability and functionality. However, the investment in multipurpose furniture can be worth it in the long run as it saves space and provides versatility in your home.

Consider whether you want to shop online or in person when shopping for your next piece of multipurpose furniture. There are pros and cons to both options. (Read How to Custom Build a Murphy Bed Online if you’re in the market for a wall bed.)

Shopping for multipurpose furniture online allows you to compare prices and styles from multiple retailers quickly, and you can do it from the comfort of your home. However, you can’t physically see or touch the furniture before buying it.

Shopping in person allows you to see and test the furniture before purchasing, but it may be more time-consuming, and you may have a more limited selection. Ultimately, it depends on your personal preferences and priorities.

10 Essential Items to Keep on Your Bedside Table

A person’s bedroom is a space where they can be their most authentic self. How they decorate and organize their bedroom can speak volumes about who they are.

This is especially the case with a person’s nightstand, as the things people put on their nightstands indicate what’s most important for them to access in the comfort of their bed.

If you want to spruce up your nightstand (or the units in your Murphy Bed), here are 10 must-have items to personalize your nightstand and help elevate your lying-in-bed time.

    1. A Jewelry Dish
A jewelry dish is a convenient way to keep all your essential accessories in one place without fearing losing them around your room. This can also help reduce clutter on your nightstand or unit by keeping all your baubles in one place.

Slip off your accessories while you get into bed, and you’ll sleep soundly, knowing you’ll never have to worry about misplacing one earring again.
    2. A Candle
Candles can evoke several different moods when used in the bedroom. They can be a dim light source in case of an emergency, a way to elevate your coziness levels, or even bring in some romance.

Whatever the purpose, candles are helpful in every room of your house, especially next to your bed. You could also get an unscented candle if you’re sensitive to scents.
    3. Books
Reading is a great way to decompress after a long day — especially when you’re bundled up in bed with a flickering candle and cup of tea next to you.

Keeping a book on your nightstand is also an easy way to ensure your newfound hobby of reading doesn’t get edged out of your busy schedule. Just keep the book you’re working on next to your bed and reach over for it to help relax your mind before sleeping.
    4. Personalized Photographs
In a world where your favorite photos are conveniently stored in the palm of your hand, there’s a sort of novelty and wholesomeness of putting physical photographs into eye-catching frames and keeping them next to your bed for you to always glance over at.

Framed photographs are an impactful way of helping a nightstand feel personal and unique to you while also adding some colour. If you have multiple open units in a Murphy Bed, they also work for adding decoration and avoiding emptiness.
    5. A Lamp
Overhead lighting can sometimes be harsh and overpowering on the eyes, especially in the middle of the night when you’re getting up to use the bathroom. As such, bedside lighting is a must-have item.

Lamps can sometimes be too big and take up all of your nightstand’s surface area, so consider a standing lamp next to your bed or installing a wall-mounted lamp on the wall behind your bed.
    6. Chargers/Charging Pads
There’s no worse feeling than waking up in the morning, turning to check your phone, and seeing that it’s dead. Avoid this by simply keeping a charging pad next to you, or a charger plugged into the closest outlet.

A quick tip: if you’re tired of unplugging your phone just so you can turn over onto your other side, just buy a longer cord! No more choosing between charging your phone or comfortably rolling over.
    7. A Notepad and Pen
Talking on the phone while lying in bed and needing to write something down? Struck with inspiration in the middle of the night that you don’t want to forget? There are several instances when having a notepad and pen beside you in bed might be beneficial.

Naturally, you may be inclined to just pull out your cellphone and write down whatever you need. But sometimes, your phone is inaccessible, or you simply don’t want to blind yourself in the middle of the night by unlocking your phone.
    8. A Bottle of Water
Staying hydrated is important, and you can help yourself maintain hydration during the night/when you wake up in the morning by keeping a water bottle within arm’s reach of your bed.

Ever wake up in the middle of the night with a seemingly unquenchable thirst? You’ll never have to experience that again with a water bottle always next to you!
    9. Tissues
Tissues can be helpful for those cold nights when you’re the slightest bit congested. Why go through a rough night of sleeping with a clogged nose when you could simply grab a tissue from your nightstand? They’re also lifesavers for any accidents you may need to wipe up.

If you’re worried about the tissue box being an eyesore, you could also get an aesthetically pleasing tissue box holder.
    10. A Silk Sleeping Mask
Depending on where your bed is located in your room, you may be subject to harsh sunlight shining directly onto your face in the morning. And while blackout curtains may help, why not opt for a sleek silk sleeping mask?

Silk sleeping masks can help enhance sleep quality by applying light pressure to your eyes while not irritating your skin with uncomfortable material. Not only that, but they help keep your skin hydrated and can reduce unwanted wrinkles or circles.

Adding Color to Your New Murphy Bed

The bedroom is the one space in a household that says the most about who you are as a person, which people don’t often think about when decorating their space in a useful way. And in your bedroom is your bed, where you likely spend most of your time — whether sleeping, looking up new hobbies to try, or simply lounging to decompress from the day.

And as the space (and, more specifically, piece of furniture) in your house that’s most reflective of yourself, you’ll want to ensure you’re not neglecting your bed’s color palette and missing out on the personality in your interior design.

If you’re looking to bring some excitement into your Murphy Bed, here are four ways you can incorporate more color into your Murphy Bed’s overall design.

Change your bedsheets for a different aesthetic

Dressing up your bed can be as decisive as dressing yourself in the morning, and much like your aspirations for dressing in a way that reflects who you are, you’ll want to give your bed that same treatment.

However, make sure you don’t get too attached to one cover or set of sheets — to keep things fresh (literally and metaphorically), throw in some wildcard designs and colors to help liven up the bedroom (color-palette wise, of course).

Used the same checkered duvet cover a few too many times? Why not switch in a calming blue cover with an additional white throw blanket on top, or perhaps go warmer with a powerful burgundy?

Ultimately, a strategically chosen duvet cover can go a long way in encapsulating your Murphy Bed’s overall feel.

Treat your eyes (and nose) with some fresh flowers or plants

If you feel like your personalized office space, AKA your Murphy Bed’s desk area lacks some much-needed energy, a lovely vase full of vibrant flowers can help bring some serenity to your busy work area. Moreover, flowers are a thoughtful touch to add to a guest room before guests arrive, so use these personalized touches when possible.

Or, if possible looking for some more (hopefully) long-term desk décor, try adding smaller houseplants to welcome some green to the area. You could even place plants in the Murphy Bed’s various open storage units, perfect for organizing your plants (and other necessities).

But if maintaining houseplants, on top of keeping a clutter-free bedroom, is too much of a hassle for you, you always have the option of using fake flowers or plants — less responsibility, but still the welcomed visual of plant life in the bedroom.

Use decorative pillows to increase color and volume

An intricate set of pillows is essential for any bed, whether for sleeping or decoration. To help liven up your Murphy Bed and cohesion with your newly changed bedsheets, try bringing in some pillows to complement your bed’s overall aesthetic.

Many different elements can go into choosing the suitable decorative pillows, which include:

    • The shape of the pillows, whether triangular, circular, square, etc.
    • The color palette, which you’ll likely want to match with your bedsheets
    • The size of the pillows, which can vary from body length to mini throw pillows
    • Their texture and material something that could add dimension to your sleeping arrangement

Just be sure to stay consistent with the pillows you choose. They don’t have to all be the same color, size, etc., but you’ll want them to fit relatively well. Otherwise, you risk your bed looking too busy with the extra accoutrements.

    Adjust your bedside lighting

While not a solid object or interchangeable piece of fabric, lighting can play a significant part in how the colors in your home become dimmer or bolder. With the right amount of expertly placed lighting fixtures, your bedroom can go from overwhelmingly stimulating with cooler lighting to calmer with warmer lighting.

You could even use a color-changing lightbulb to grant guests access to a broader range of color options for a little more excitement. This could also be a great selling point for incoming students renting your space, as these tend to be popular amongst those in that age bracket looking to make their rooms more exciting.

4 Ways a Murphy Bed can Help You Start a Hobby

Fresh starts always mean reevaluating the time (or lack of) you leave for new pursuits and finding ways to give yourself the time to try something new. Choosing side projects and self-care activities can be tricky while maintaining a work-life balance, being present for events and other people, and keeping up with daily chores and tasks.

It also doesn’t help when there’s a lack of room to begin a new hobby, whether space for the necessary supplies or simply the area to participate in an activity.

Murphy Beds are the perfect solution if you want to start a new hobby without compromising on space or disorganization. With these beds’ ability to be tucked away, which makes way for activities throughout the day, and their many storage solutions, there are plenty of ways to jump-start a newfound passion, thanks to a Murphy Bed.

Here are four examples of how a Murphy Bed can help.

Let your creative juices flow freely

Although many at-home artists have the luxury of a designated art room to store easels, art supplies, and canvases, not every aspiring DaVinci is fortunate enough to have a spare room. This alone can be a massive factor in people dropping or never pursuing an art hobby, like painting, sketching, or sculpting.

As a multi-functional piece of furniture, Murphy Beds can operate as a sleeping unit and an office area, thanks to the desk attachment that comes with select ones. This presents at-home artists with a space to work without having to worry about not having an entire room dedicated to their hobby.

And while the problem with art supplies is that they tend to be a little messy — both in their usage and sheer quantities of supplies — this can quickly be resolved thanks to the many storage solutions that Murphy Beds provide.

Display your growing book collection in the Murphy Bed’s storage units

A book collection can clutter your living room over time, and bookcases ultimately take up a lot of room. For people wanting to get into reading but fear they lack the necessary space for storing books, the Murphy Bed’s storage units allow you to freely display your tomes or sneakily store them behind doors — depending on how you customize your Murphy Bed.

This is a constructive storage solution for university students looking to satisfy their love of reading for fun with their obligatory course readings (something rental owners can advertise for students).

    DIY your unique clothes

Though some people may not see fashion as a hobby, a lot of planning and DIY-ing goes into putting together a good look and collecting staple pieces. And if you’re looking to get into fashion, a great tip is to create your signature clothing. Not only does this give your clothing and accessories their unique pizazz, but it also gives you the satisfaction of knowing you personalized your outfit.

The desk attachment will be your best friend and designer ally in this process, and there are many ways to use it:

    • Place a sewing machine on the table and see your clothes come to life
    • Lay out all your needlework supplies while you use an embroidery hoop
    • Put a plastic cloth or newspapers on the table and tie-dye different clothing
    • Bedazzle a tote bag while putting your supplies in front of you

Once your new wardrobe is created, you can simply store them on your Murphy Bed’s shelves — and after that, you can go to bed in style.

Find peace in having room to workout

Hobbies are a way to help you decompress after a day (or week, or month) of non-stop stress, and one of the most common ways people de-stress is by sweating out their worries.

Whether you need room to do some yoga or follow a video workout routine, your Murphy Bed can turn your sleeping area into a functional exercise space, sparing you from going out to a gym or cram workout equipment in your living room.

All you must do is push your Murphy Bed into place, and you now have the space to work out in whichever way you want.

(We go into further detail on how Murphy Beds help with exercising in this blog post on creating a home gym.)

How a Murphy Bed Helps You Exercise at Home

Between gym memberships being way too overpriced, and the nerves that come with exercising around other people, finding a way to workout may be harder than working out itself. And while some people have the benefit of creating home gyms filled with equipment, not everyone has the luxury to do so due to limited household space.

But having limited room to move doesn’t necessarily mean you have to give up on fitting in a workout. In fact, there are many work arounds to help you workout around your house.

Looking to squeeze in a workout from home without compromising on space and furniture? Murphy Bed is here to help!

Easily store your bed to increase workout space

A major issue people tend to run into when doing at-home exercises is that they don’t have enough room to perform a yoga routine or follow an instructional Pilates video.

Luckily, Murphy Beds are pretty flexible.

All you have to do is store your Murphy Bed by pushing it up against its bed frame, and you suddenly have all of the space you need to move your body. The quick storage capabilities of a Murphy Bed allow you the freedom to exercise in the privacy of your own room, without having to downsize your bed and cabinets.

You can do a quick HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout with your bed upright, and then pull your bed down when you’re ready to unwind.

This can be especially impactful in guest rooms when you have active guests coming to stay, or if you need some space to let your children run around and burn off some energy.

Workout at your desk while you work from home

With the new and improved work-from-home model, people are working at home offices more than ever. And something all people can relate to, whether working from home or on location, is that it’s difficult to exercise given how much time is spent working.

Thankfully, there are methods to working out while being right at your desk — and with a Murphy Bed’s attachable built-in desk unit, you’ll have the combined benefit of work and relaxation.

If you’re restless from sitting at your desk and want to stretch your legs, simply put a desk riser on top of our Murphy Bed’s desk to turn it into a standing desk. This not only helps prevent you from sitting the entire workday, but it also opens you to a well of various techniques for working out.

    You could get:

    • A treadmill to put under your desk to ensure you’re hitting your step goals
    • A balance board to stand on to engage your core while you’re engaged in your work
    • An exercise/stability ball to keep your posture tight
    • Ankle weights to wear while you do leg extensions

    The list could go on!

Fit your fitness equipment in the storage units

Yoga mats, dumbbells, foam rollers, and jumping ropes — these are just a few pieces of workout equipment that, when not stored properly, can contribute to major clutter in your house.

Murphy Beds solution to this is the various shelving spaces they come with, perfect for storing exercise equipment that’s small enough to fit into a drawer or a shelf. The cabinets are especially helpful for people looking to reduce clutter, as they simultaneously keep things organized and out of guest’s sight.

Many of the Murphy Bed designs have designated amounts of side cabinets, drawers, shelves, etc. But if you’re the type of person who needs several nooks to fit all of your belongings, or you have a specific aesthetic idea of how you want your shelves to look, you can also customize your own Murphy Bed to fit your needs.

It’s time to begin stretching, because your next home workout is one Murphy Bed-purchase away from starting! Try Murphy Bed’s Build-A-Bed app to get a start on your fitness journey, or call us for on-hand assistance.

How to Create the Perfect Guest Room with a Murphy Bed

The holidays are coming up, and your home is about to become decorated with festive flair, overcome with joy and laughter, and, most of all, full.

With plenty of family members and guests to accommodate this season, it can be impossible to feel like the perfect host — especially when it comes to the stress of preparing a guest room.

Whether guests are staying for a few days, a week, or the whole holiday season, you will want to provide them with the perfect guest room — and we’re here to help!

Here are different ways a Murphy Bed can give your guests the gift of holiday hospitality.

    Make room for some baggage

If there’s one thing you can be sure of, your guests will have some luggage with them. And depending on the duration of their stay (and how heavy of a packer they are), you may find yourself at a loss for where to store all of their belongings.

Thankfully, Murphy Beds have plenty of storage solutions built into them, so you can satisfy any packer, you host.

Your guest can store their clothing and other items in the shelving units and fit their luggage under the desk extension — or even on the shelve themselves (in the case of smaller luggage).

‘Tis the season to sleep comfortably

After a long night of eating dinner with loved ones, catching up with old friends, or frantically doing last-minute shopping, the first thing you’ll want to do is crawl into bed and get a good night’s sleep. Why should your guests miss out on a good night’s sleep too? Skip the air mattress, and spare your friends from sleeping uncomfortably on your couch.

Comfort is a Murphy Bed guarantee, thanks to their ability to house thicker mattresses (and mattress toppers) on their frame — which can’t be said about futons or pull-out couches.

    Declutter. Declutter. Declutter.

Between constant dinner parties, the cold outside being dragged into the house, and wrapping paper flying through the living room, your home is bound to get messy.

But the last thing you want is for your guests to arrive, and there’s already a mess — not to mention the incoming mess that your guests can create.

Murphy Beds are a key component for a household to become clutter-free. This is attested to their all-in-one convenience of multiple shelves and door extensions to cover up the clutter on the shelves.

Guest Room? How about “Multi-Functional Space”?

Although people are coming home for the holidays, that doesn’t always mean that they’re without responsibilities to attend to. This is especially the case with many companies making a move to a work-from-home formula.

By adding a desk attachment to your Murphy Bed, you’re providing your guests with a multi-purpose space. They can decompress while lying on a comfy mattress, or they can get some work done by turning over and sitting at a desk. It’s basically like they have their own home office, without needing to leave their guest room.

And if they’re itching to get some yoga in, or need the extra room, they can simply store their Murphy Bed for optimal space!

Murphy Beds vs. Futons and Pull-Out Couches: What are the Benefits?

Murphy Beds, futons, and pull-out couches are all space-saving beds that share many similarities, which range from how they’re marketed to how they’re used. But because of their many resemblances, it can be hard to differentiate between them when the time comes to buy a bed.

When looking at the details between the three, which include their builds, functionality, etc., these beds are quite different, and knowing these distinctions can significantly impact which one you put in your home.

    Mattress comfort levels

Comfort is perhaps the most significant aspect of sleep, and each bed offers a different sleeping experience.

Sofa beds are subject to thinner mattresses due to being constrained by the size limitations of the sofa frame. The mattress will need to be thinner to fold in on itself, meaning that thicker mattresses (or those of a certain material) cannot be used.

Futons have a less durable mattress and are prone to wear and tear from doubling as sofa cushions and backrests. While this accommodates how light they can be (and lets them be easier to move around), it does compromise how comfortable they are and how long they’ll last from overuse.

On the other hand, Murphy Beds can handle a thicker mattress that isn’t subject to constant sitting or being folded. Since the frame folds into the wall/frame, the mattress can retain its shape and can even handle mattress toppers for added comfort that doesn’t need to be removed when storing.

    The versatility of each bed

The benefit of Murphy Beds, futons, and pull-out couches is their ability to serve as more than one piece of furniture. This is especially helpful to families needing multi-purpose rooms or renters seeking better ways to market their rental homes.

Futons and pull-out couches have two primary functions:

    • It can be used as seating for guests
    • Can be transformed into a sleeping space — whether by pulling the frame out of the couch or folding the couches’ backrests down, respectively

Murphy Beds, on the other hand, serve different functions entirely:

    • Can be used as a bed by pulling the frame down from the bedframe (either placed against a wall or embedded in the wall)
    • Can have a desk attachment, perfect for people needing an office space
    • Can be used for storage by using the various units (which are a big help for reducing clutter)
    • Can be used as a closet (installation for hanging clothes may be required in this sense, but option to fold clothing or place shoes in units is readily available)

Although Murphy Beds cannot offer seating in the way that a futon or pull-out couch can, they provide more in terms of versatility. Preference, then, comes down to whether you simply want to sit with your bed frame or want a bed frame that can also act as a closet, an office area, and so on.

    Comparing space-saving capabilities and convenience

The main selling point between these three sleeping options is that they’re meant to be space savers, something that benefits families or individuals living in small spaces. But the question is, just how much space does each save?

Futons are always present in whatever room they’re in, but because they don’t require too much external furniture movement in the way a pull-out couch would, they live up to their space-saving reputation. The only con in this regard is that they can’t be stored or put away, so space cannot be created by them folding into themselves.

This differs from Murphy Beds and pull-out couches, which house the main bed components within themselves. What separates the two is that pull-out couches, when used as a bed, may require rearrangement to allow the bed some space — this could be a coffee table pushed aside or ottomans stacked on each other.

One thing to consider is that between the three, Murphy Beds are the only ones that don’t require constant set-up of bedding, pillows, etc. Everything placed on a Murphy Bed can be left when the bed is stored (or pillows, if bigger, can be put in one of the units).

Since futons and pull-out couches act secondarily as sofas, bedding must be constantly removed/set. Essentially, more moving parts are required for a futon or pull-out couch to be “ready,” whereas a Murphy Bed can just be pulled down and ready for use.

Best Home Office Setup for Small Spaces

At-home offices, usually consisting of a desk and other office accessories, are essential for any home, whether used for the hybrid work-from-home lifestyle or students tackling their respective assignments.

But for families, students, or workers living in smaller homes and apartments, the reality of dedicating an area or room simply for an office is nearly impossible. It would only come at the expense of moving or dipping into money saved up for much-needed vacations. And trust us, we know how badly you need that vacation.

With a Murphy Bed desk attachment you no longer need to compromise to get an efficient work area. Read on to find out why.

    The work-from-home hybrid lifestyle perfected

As many companies transition from strictly on-location employment to the hybrid work-from-home model, workers now find themselves home more often and require a work area that accommodates their everyday office needs.

Yet having a designated desk area has its concerns, including:

    • The potential for clutter to form
    • Having to select a whole space or room solely for the desk
    • How costly it is to furnish an office

Thankfully, our Murphy Bed’s desk attachment (as seen in our Lexington frame) provides a sleek, compact workspace that doesn’t take up too much room while also participating in solving space issues. This attachment also ensures that clutter can be taken care of (perfect for people seeking anti-mess solutions) and that additional furniture doesn’t need to be bought. In other words, there’s no better hybrid like a Murphy Bed for the work-from-home folks!

    Workspace for the active learner

For parents/guardians with kids or teens, a Murphy Bed is an intuitive way to blend a relaxation space, workspace, storage space, and entertainment space, all in one compact piece of furniture.

Murphy Beds are the perfect way for families in smaller spaces to give their active learners their office area while sparing the cost and length of getting them both a desk and a bed.

Rather than working from a bed or in the dining area, the desk attached to a Murphy Bed will give children their designated desk. And when they’re not working or sleeping, the bed can be efficiently stored, allowing them space for their toys, sports gear, new hobbies (that they definitely won’t grow bored from), and so on.

You can also personalize their Murphy Bed using our Build-A-Bed function (follow these helpful guidelines) to adhere to their desires, making this workspace feel entirely their own.

    A university student’s space saver

Any college or university student knows how tight a dorm room or rental space can be (especially on a university budget). If you’re stressing over cramming a bed frame and desk in one area (while simultaneously cramming for an exam), a Murphy Bed may be the answer you’re looking for.

This can also be beneficial for renters or hosts of university students who wish to advertise a combined office space and bedroom for potential international students.

It’s a clever way to help you stand out amongst the several other hosts, all while giving your student all the accommodations they could need (and there are more ways that Murphy Beds can help renters!).

Becoming Clutter Free with a Murphy Bed

A clean home is a happy home, and homeowners/renters everywhere know how hard it can be to keep their living areas free from disarray:

    -Books and papers scattered about
    -Toys or pet supplies everywhere
    -An overabundance of décor
-Shelves or drawers crammed with belongings
    -Clothes left out

Between cramming too much furniture in one area, not having enough storage solutions, or dealing with “pesky” residents (pets, children, or the occasional messy roommate), maintaining the cleanliness in one’s home can be challenging.

Thankfully, there’s one thing Murphy Beds know how to do, and that is to keep things organized.

If you’re looking to reduce the clutter in your home (and subsequently the clutter clouding your mind), here’s how a Murphy Bed can help!

    Shelving storage solutions

As the saying goes, there’s a place for everything and everything in its place — and this could not be truer when it comes to the shelving units in some of our Murphy Beds.

Designed as part of the Murphy Bed frame, these units (known as Accessories) can solve plenty of storage problems. Suppose you’re prone to disorganization when interior decorating. In that case, the Accessories allow you to place aesthetically and functionally items in one place, rather than being strewn about your office or living room.

Plus, if hiding your items is part of your clutter-free vision, you can add doors to each Accessory — either a small Door to cover a single unit or a Wardrobe Door to cover two vertically. You can further personalize this unit using our Build-A-Bed function (which you can experiment with).

    Room for minimalism

Want to increase cleanliness by removing unnecessary furniture/items from your home? Murphy Beds can help with that as well.

Minimalism is a design aesthetic that has continued to dominate the interior-designing market. Murphy Beds fit wonderfully into the minimalism adherence to reductive elements in one’s home and the less-is-more mentality.

Try using a Murphy Bed unit with fewer shelves (like The Lancaster) to encourage you not to fill them or designate an area for your few belongings with The Designer, which keeps a storage area above the Murphy Bed and out of the way.

    All-in-one convenience

At their core, Murphy Beds are meant to be multifunctional pieces of furniture with the sound structure of a cabinet, desk, closet, etc., all mixed into one.

Ultimately, having a Murphy Bed with the appropriate amenities (which you can customize) keeps you from adding more furniture to your home, saving you both space and money.

With the ability to disappear into your wall unit, Murphy Beds create more space in your master/guest bedroom or studio apartment, allowing you the freedom of an opener area. This solution is beneficial for families in smaller apartments, as this creates space for parents to work at a desk and for children to play (once the bed is put away) in one area.

To reduce clutter in your home with a Murphy Bed, try out the Build-A-Bed app, and check out our blog post on how to use it for additional assistance.

How Families Can Add Space to Small Apartments

With the average cost of single-detached homes and townhomes skyrocketing throughout Canada and the United States, more and more young families are being forced to remain in condos and apartments longer and longer. At first blush, that means raising your little rapscallions without the benefit of a dedicated play area or separate rooms for each child. Sorry, Dad—it also probably means saying goodbye to the Man Cave.

Sound like a nightmare? It doesn’t have to. You just have to get creative with your space and think outside the box.

Raising kids in condos certainly presents a space issue. Mom, dad, the kiddos, and maybe even a cat and a dog all need room to live and play and breathe. But with a little bit of careful planning and some savvy interior design choices, you can make condo life more preferable than breaking the bank (or your financial future) on a single-detached home or townhome. (Can you say “lower mortgage payments”?)

But raising a family in a condo or apartment is no easy feat. The two biggest issues are 1) lack of storage space and 2) lack of living space. Depending on your condo and how many kids you have, a close third might be a lack of bedrooms.

The most effective way to free up more space and add more storage is to dramatically rethink the number one space taker-uppers in your home, the beds. They’re soft and they’re cushy and the best place to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon, but they’re space killers—plain and simple. They often take up an entire room and, because of this, we end up using bedrooms for little more sleep.

How do you turn bed-space into a 2-for-1 combination of extra living space and extra storage space?

Consider installing a Murphy bed or two, depending on your needs. Murphy beds let you turn otherwise unusable daytime space into valuable everyday square footage in your home. They also offer varying degrees of added built-in storage, so you can empty out those overflowing closets and over-crammed drawers.

A Murphy bed installed in a child’s room, for instance, turns the entire space into a wide-open playroom once the bed is folded up and out of the way. In mom and dad’s room, fold up the bed and voila—you’ve got plenty of room for that at-home yoga session.

If you’re in this position now—or expect to be in this position in the next few years—start by reconsidering the space you have. How can you make it work for each of your family members? How many kids do you have now? How many do you plan to have within the next few years?

A few savvy choices can make raising a family in a condo or apartment not only a financially sound choice, but also an opportunity to flex your creative interior design muscles. Try our Build-A-Bed app to test a few designs for your space—the design possibilities are endless!

How to Custom Build a Murphy Bed Online

Take a do-it-yourself approach when designing a Murphy Wall Bed for your space. With so many options to choose from, you can build a wall bed that reflects a minimalist style, offers lots of storage with an open-concept wall cabinet, or a contemporary home office unit with a Scandi-vibe. Add LED lights to set a mood or to create a reading space.

A Murphy Wall Bed comes with a frame, the lifting mechanism, the leg system and instructions, and the cabinetry you’ve chosen. If you prefer a less hands-on approach, consider choosing an already-designed best seller option like The Canvas or The Californian, or a simpler design like our popular The Bachelor, which sees the Murphy Bed fold up behind two doors.

Our Build-A-Bed app lets you dare to dream with the finish and accessories. Extra shelves? More drawers? It’s up to you. Start with the orientation, the frame, and then the styling features.

    Wall bed orientation

First, look at the floor space and layout of your room. If it’s a long room, you might want to think about installing the Murphy Bed to be horizontal to the wall.

    Wall bed size

Next, think about what bed size. Choose a single, single x-long, double/full or a queen size frame.

Wall bed frame and leg height

Now decide on the frame – either Elite Aluminum or Supreme Steel. Both options have different benefits, hold different weights and provide differing warranties.

For example, Elite Aluminum bed frame and mechanism kit support up to 900 kg (2,000 lbs); the Supreme Steel option supports about 770 kg (1,700 lbs). When the bed is in the upright position the mechanisms can withstand a maximum of 220 lb, which includes the combined weight of the front panels, bed frame, stiffeners, crossbar, legs and mattress.

How long should the legs be? That depends on your mattress choice. Our app will figure that out once you’ve selected the mattress size.

Best mattress types for Murphy Beds

We recommend a 10″ inner coil or spring mattress weighing between 27- 34 kgs (60-75 lbs) for our Murphy Bed Hardware. Avoid latex, gel or Tempurpedic mattresses as their structures can be pretty heavy.

If you go bigger with the mattress, consider the extended legs on your bed, which can raise the cabinet height. Extended legs are restricted to 12”.

You decide on the touch and give of the mattress, firm, soft or just right.

    Cabinet and door finishes

Murphy wall beds come in a variety of finishes including laminates, veneers and an unfinished maple, which you can stain to your liking. (If you’re indecisive about the finish options, we can send you a few samples to check out before you commit.)  Choices include a wood grain laminate in shades such as Autumn Glow or European Walnut, textured laminates such as Misty White or Wallowa Pine, and wood veneer in an unfinished maple.

A wall bed with a hutch

Think about your space and how you’ll use it. If you add a hutch to your Murphy Bed it will be a multifunctional piece. If you install a Murphy Bed to use an office by day, add shelves to store books and computer accessories. A smaller bedroom? Add drawers or a cupboard to hide things and keep the room tidy.

    Configure, order, ship

We ship Murphy Beds for free across North America; they come unassembled.

We estimate about 5-8 hours for installation, depending on the cabinetry you order. And we can be there along each installation step with help online or just a phone call away. We have several videos that can help you install as well.

If you need an extra set of hands, maybe even wrangle one of those adult children you babysit for to help with the setup. (In exchange for overnight babysitting of the grandchildren, of course!)

While your Murphy Bed is being shipped, you can research those linens and throw cushions that will make this piece a part of your home.

Our customer service team can walk you through your space and the Murphy Wall-Bed options if you’d like a second opinion. Give us a call; we promise that a human will be here to help.

When to Buy a Murphy Bed

What’s a bed called that folds into the wall? Well, that’s a good question – and here’s where we officially introduce you to the Murphy Bed, a multifunctional piece of furniture. A Murphy Bed is a hinged bed that folds up into cabinetry when not in use. With our brand, your wall bed simply disappears against the wall into a hutch or behind doors (you decide!). Designs are customizable from the bed to the frame to how it’s stored.

Depending on the orientation (or how it’s hung), a Murphy Bed can be vertical (from the side) or horizontal (from the end). Installation is dependent upon your room setup and layout. It’s folded up against a wall and disappears into gorgeous cabinetry when you don’t need it. Installed on hinges, a Murphy Bed can be pulled down and pushed back up into the cabinetry with minimal effort (or strength!).

And as a bonus, the bed can be already made with linens before it’s tucked away. When it’s bedtime, the Murphy Bed can be quickly, easily and safely pulled down (some even say with one finger!) for guests. There is no need for late-night searching for matching bed linens or wrestling with the dreaded bottom sheet after a long night of catching up.

The Murphy in the Murphy Bed

Essentially, an innovator (aptly named Murphy) in the 1900s invented the Murphy Bed to solve a space problem in their tiny San Francisco apartment. This design has stood the test of time, with Murphy Beds once again seeing a resurgence of popularity in everything from personal homes, cabins, university dormitories, Airbnbs and even fire stations.

Wall beds have been around a long time to solve a problem – they remove the unused space that a bed takes up, leaving you with more space for living. Designs may have changed over the years, but one thing remains consistent – they are a space saver.

Today, Murphy Beds are designed with shelves, side tables, side cabinets, lighting and double doors to make it all the more functional and add custom design elements to your interior.

Are wall beds comfortable to sleep on?

Anyone who has slept (or rather tried to sleep) on a slowly deflating air mattress at their friend’s or family member’s house knows how welcoming it is to spend the night on a solid guest bed. A Murphy Wall-Bed provides a good quality bed for those that we love. And that we hope they will want to visit us again at some point.

We provide you with a Murphy Bed kit: the hardware and the cabinetry. You then go out and choose your own mattress based on personal preferences, like soft or firm.

    Murphy Beds are safe

The Murphy Wall-Bed is safe, durable and comes with iron-clad warranties. However, please ensure that your hardware is installed correctly and maintained properly like any piece of furniture.

You can install a wall bed anywhere in the house – from an office to a spare room to even a nook, providing privacy for all. You can avoid tip-toeing around a snoring guest on the living room couch, wasting valuable floor space in a perhaps not often used guest bedroom, or hoping that the grandchildren don’t hear you before you’ve had a chance to drink that first coffee in the morning.

You (and your guests!) can sleep more soundly as a Murphy Wall-Bed is a good investment for the home. It’s also a storage solution that you can customize to your taste and style.
